Angola
According to the best estimates Angola has between 21 and 26 million inhabitants, with 1/3 – 1/2 of those living in Luanda, the nation’s capital. Nearly half of the population is estimated to be younger than 15 years of age. The colony Angola was known as Portuguese West Africa (P. East Africa became Mozambique). While…

Westbound
First part of our tour in Angola: From Ruacana (Namibian border) to Foz do Cunene (where the sweat water of Cunene river marries the salt water of the Atlantic)

Caution! Schistosomiasis!
1 out of 4 Angolans suffers from Schistosomiasis, the insidious worm disease which is transmitted by worm larvae mainly in freshwater. Only because we don’t see what is happening beneath the surface of the water we may find this pic of the three kids cute and nice. Praziquantel – one of the highlights in Merck’s…

Als Viehzüchter, Jäger und Sammler leben sie auf beiden Seiten des Kunene, also sowohl in Nord-Namibia als auch in Süd-Angola – und passieren den Fluss ohne Krokodilangriffe und ohne Passkontrollen.

River Camp
We had been looking forward to a bath in the Cunene River as according to one of our books crocodiles avoid the area right after a waterfall. When we saw the footprints we knew that crocs don’t read German books.

Northbound
So far we had been driving in a westward direction. Having reached the west coast of Angola (and as our Toyo is not a ship), we turn to the north (blue line) along the coast. We know that there are route sections where the distance between the dunes of the Namib desert and the Atlantic…
