Wir haben Lilongwe gen Westen verlassen und sind nach einer Stunde an der Grenze von Malawi nach Sambia. Das Schild „One stop border post“ lässt auf unkomplizierte Prozesse hoffen. Leider ist bisher nur das Schild fertig, das Gebäude noch im Rohbau. Wir stöhnen über 12 Anlaufstationen, die wir gemeinsam mit amerikanischen Missionaren, afrikanischen LKW-Fahrern und europäischen Rucksack-Reisenden in (zu) kleinen Räumen verbringen:

- Health Check Sambia: Prüfung der Covid-19-Impfungen
- Kasse Sambia: Visum bezahlen (25 USD p.P.)

- Zoll Sambia: Import-Dokument für Toyo stempeln
- Kasse Sambia: Carbon Tax bezahlen (240 Kwatcha pro Auto)
- Dokument für Carbon Tax abholen
- Kasse Sambia: Road Fee bezahlen (20 USD pro Auto)
- Dokument für Road Fee abholen
- Kasse Sambia: City Council Levy bezahlen und (zeitgleich!) Dokument erhalten (50 Kwatcha pro Auto)
- Mit dem Auto zum Grenzbaum und einen der vielen Zettel wieder abgeben, damit sich der Grenzbaum öffnet.
Im Frühjahr hat die sambische Regierung für EU-Bürger die Visums-Gebühr auf 25 USD halbiert. Zum 1.10. hat sie sogar die Visumspflicht ganz abgeschafft. Aber über diesen „Doppel-Wumms“ haben wir uns zu früh gefreut! Das Parlament hat noch nicht zugestimmt, sodass es für uns zwar etwas billiger, aber nicht zeitsparender wird. Wir wissen Europas Grenzen jetzt wieder ein bisschen mehr zu schätzen.
We left Lilongwe heading west and after an hour we are at the border from Malawi to Zambia. The sign „One stop border post“ gives hope for uncomplicated processes. Unfortunately, so far only the sign is finished, the building is still under construction. We moan about the 12 stops we spend together with American missionaries, African truck drivers and European backpackers in small rooms:

- Health Check Zambia: check Covid-19 vaccinations
- Cashier Zambia: pay visa (25 USD p.p. – still only half)
- Immigration Zambia: Visa and entry stamp in the passport
- Customs Zambia: Stamp import document for Toyo
- Cashier Zambia: pay Carbon Tax (240 Kwatcha per car)
- Collect document for Carbon Tax
- Cashier Zambia: pay Road Fee (20 USD per car)
- Collect document for Road Fee
- Cashier Zambia: Pay City Council Levy and (at the same time!) receive document (50 Kwatcha per car)
- Take the car to the border tree and hand in one of the many slips of paper so that the last barrier opens.
The Zambian government halved the visa fee for EU citizens to 25 USD in spring. On 1 October, it even abolished the visa requirement altogether. But we cheered too soon! Parliament has not yet approved it, so it will be cheaper for us, but not less bureaucratic. We now appreciate Europe’s borders a bit more again.
