Windhoek

Arrived in Namibia’s capital. The country has the size of 2 times Germany – but only 2 million inhabitants. Those with a sharp tongue pretend that the country does not need a president, but a Lord Major would be enough. Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs still stick to the name „Windhuk“- the German name in colonial times.

Nearly 1/4 of the 2 million Namibians live in this city. With a growing tendency. Windhoek  is expected to become a megacity (> 1 mio inhabitants) until 2030.

Namibia had been a colony of the German Empire from 1884 to 1915. After that it was South-Africans who occupied the country which finally gained independence only in 1990. But more than a century after having been „German South-West“ you can still see and feel the German influence, be it with the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte or the „Allgemeine Zeitung“ or the street names.

Currently Windhoek suffers a severe water shortage due to a sustained drought over the past three years. Usage of water for car washing, watering the garden or filling the pool is strictly forbidden.
